Educational Center, Hradec Králové
The main artistic motif of the new educational center consists of two curves based on an ellipse. These curves rise at different heights from the internal medicine pavilion and, after reaching their peak, return back to the ground.

The curves define the shape of the roof and form large-span shell structures that shape the two main volumes of the building. The larger and longer volume, with a prominently glazed, lightweight façade, defines the entrance area for both buildings and closes off the southern side of the hospital's central quiet zone. This section includes seminar rooms, libraries, computer study rooms, and service areas. The shorter, lower, but deeper volume is designated for the lecture hall.
The goal of the design was not to compete with other pavilions or obstruct views from the internal medicine pavilion but to create a building that leaves a lasting impression, stands out from other hospital structures, and emphasizes its special function. The architectural concept is based on contrasts. The striking, arching curves of the pavilion are balanced by its restrained form. The raw exposed concrete contrasts with precisely crafted metal and the elegance of glass, while the gray concrete opposes the natural beauty of wood. Enclosed spaces alternate with unexpected vistas and glazed facades.
In 1999, the DOMY architectural studio won the competition for the Internal Medicine Pavilion, introducing a modern architectural approach to a city previously associated mainly with Josef Gočár. This studio subsequently completed three interconnected pavilions linked to the brutalist Pavilion of Academician Bedrna.
